What are you focusing on?
What are you making it mean?
What significance have you attached to it?
What are you going to do about it?

Have you ever heard of a guy named Colonel Sanders? Of course you have. How did Colonel Sanders become such an unbelievable success? Was it because he was born wealthy? Was his family rich? Did they send him to a top university like Harvard? Maybe he was successful because he started his business when he was really young. Are any of these true?

The answer is no. Colonel Sanders didn’t begin to fulfill his dream until he was 65 years old! What drove him to finally take action? He was broke and alone. He got his first social security check for $105, and he got mad but instead of blaming society or just writing congress a nasty note, he started asking himself, “What could I do that would be valuable for other people? What could I give back?” He started thinking about what he had that was valuable to others.

His first answer was, “Well, I have this chicken, recipe, everyone seems to love! What if I sold my chicken recipe to restaurants? Could I make money doing that?” Then he immediately thought, “That’s ridiculous. Selling my recipe won’t even pay the rent.” And he got a new idea: “What if I not only sold them my recipe but also showed them how to cook the chicken properly? What if the chicken was so good that it increased their business? If more people come to see them and they make more chicken sales, maybe they will give me a percentage of those additional sales.”

Many people have great ideas. But Colonel Sander was different. He was a man who didn’t just think of great things to do. He put them into action. He went and started knocking on doors, telling each restaurant owner his story: “I have a great chicken recipe, and I think if you use it, it’ll increase your sales. And I’d like to get a percentage of that increase.”

Well, many people laughed in his face. They said, “Look, old man, get out of here. What are you wearing that stupid white suit for?” Did Colonel Sanders give up? Absolutely not. He had the #1 key to success; I call it personal power. Personal power means being persistence in taking action: Every time you do something, you learn from it, and you find a way to do it better next time. Colonel Sanders certainly used his personal power! Instead of feeling bad about the last restaurant that had rejected his idea, he immediately start focusing on how to tell his story more effectively and get better results from the next restaurant.

How many times do you think Colonel Sanders heard no before getting the answer he wanted? He was refused 1,009 times before he heard his first yes. His spent two years driving across America in his old, beat-up car, sleeping in the back seat in his rumpled white suit, getting up each day eager to share his idea with someone new. Often, the only food he had was a quick bite of the samples he was preparing for perspective buyers. How many people do you think would have gone for 1,009 no’s – two years of no’s! – and kept on going? Very few. That’s why there is only one Colonel Sanders. I think most people wouldn’t get passed twenty no’s, much less a hundred or a thousand! Yet this is sometimes what it takes to succeed.

If you look at any of the most successful people in history, you will found this common thread: They would not be denied. They would not accept no. They would not allow anything to stop them from making their vision, their goal, a reality. Did you know that Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got financing for his dream of creating “The Happiest Place on Earth”? All the banks thought he was crazy. He wasn’t crazy; he was a visionary and, more important, he was committed to making that vision a reality. Today, millions of people have shared in “the joy of Disney”, a world like no other, a world launched by the decision of one man.

It is amazing to me how easy it is to disconnect and miss out on a daily basis to what is truly improtant. Wake up and head to the computer to check email, bank accounts or FaceBook and bam, you miss the best moments of getting up and eating a bowl of cereal with your kids. Then you jump in your car and turn on the radio. Of course everything you here is full of compassion, non-judgemental ideas, love and patience. Oh wait, nope. You drink your coffee and flip through the channels and never enjoy just the silence or the sound of the rain on the windshield or the sound of wind passing by you at 65 on the freeway. Of course work was never designed to refresh the soul, but it has a way of robbing your emotions and raining you mentally, emotionally and physically if you let it. Technology, anxiety, fear, staying inside, electricity all have a way of getting in the way. Here is my list for 2010 to make getting your soul back a priority. I am not saying everyday but every month for sure.:

-Avoid technology
-Connect with loved ones
-Get Outside
-Light Candles
-Find silence
-Give Back and Give Big
-Get around some kids and enter their imaginative world

What can you add to the list?

Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. – Henry David Thoreau

I go through times when my brain literally gets filled up with so many thoughts and directions that it makes it difficult to navigate. Most of the time I like to whiteboard these thoughts and then organize them and it helps. I don’t think I have ever just gone unplugged for a couple of days and enjoyed silence and solitude.

I can’t imagine why I wouldn’t do this, but I guess I just get a little anxious if I am not connected some way. All the noise of our lives places a drain on our soul. I am looking forward to a time of solitude and restoration. A time to get my thoughts cleared and my vision sharp. Have you ever unplugged like this? Where did you go? What did you do? Did you learn anything?

For many in life there is a cycle of commitment and dedication, struggle, failure, shame, defeat, frustration, recommitment and then the cycle begins again.

The cycle will be broken when we believe the truth about our righteousness in Jesus. Every thought, belief, and emotion should be founded on the absolute reality of our righteousness in Jesus.

Failure to build one’s life on this reality is the cause of fear, mental anxiety, vulnerability to sin and all other wavering and inconsistencies.

The issue of righteousness is the most important doctrinal issue that we will come to terms with in our lives.

Everything that is not working in you life can be traced back to some aspect of what you believe about righteousness. The issue of righteousness will become the cornerstone or the stumbling stone.

I am currently at work on the final elements for our new focus for E3 Church titled: F My Life. We are issuing a challenge and encouraging 5 to 10 people who are looking at making a significant step forward in their life to allow us to come along for the ride. We will be equipping them with tools to take the journey online and make it open to our community and their network of friends. They will each get a FlipHD camera, a WP blog login and an education on the proper use of social media to detail their story. You can follow the 365 day journey on http://www.FindSignificance.com.

I think most people would like to have a deeper connection with God, have a deeper connection with their friends, spouses and families, have more energy and be in better shape, make a step towards financial freedom and just get focused. I am in the same boat.

I believe 2010 is going to be a year of transformation. I have decided to take the same journey myself and will update here on a weekly basis.

In the heart of every person there is a longing to experience a quality of life beyond what most will ever know. Because of our self perception we find ourselves caught in an up and down cycle that can go on and on for years and years, while we never realize the dreams we so desire.

2010 is approaching in just a few short days, and I thought a good way to begin this blog would be to talk about how to actually capture the quality of life we all desire. It comes by changing how you see yourself. As a follower of Jesus, this is what is talked about in the Bible when it tells us to put off the old man and put on the new man. Changing your self perception is the key to yielding to righteousness. We have to change how we see ourselves to align with God’s view and opinion which connects us to a wholeness that empowers us to live God’s very best.

You are who God says you are. Do what it takes to believe that! Do whatever it takes to see yourself as God sees you. This is the new identity that is represented in the Good News. It isn’t about following rituals and legalism, but coming into an awareness of how valuable and loved you are by God and understanding what He has done for you through His son Jesus through His death, burial and resurrection.

Let’s stay focused for this next year, living loved by God, believing that what He says about us is true and let His identity become our reality!

Today I was reminded that ultimately God cares more about who you’re becoming than what your doing. Too often I’m tempted to measure my value and worth to God based on my achievements. Whether they’re business related, financial, physical- I find myself thinking that God is impressed by my efforts. When in reality, I wonder how often he is shaking his head? He cares more about who I’m becoming than what I’m doing. The husband, the father, the friend…who I am. When I stop and remind myself of this tiny fact its easy to see how far off I can wander and how easily I can lose my way.
